Lychgate: what is a charm?

‘Nature, Time and Experience teach, and folklore remembers’.

An Amulet compared to a Talisman

A charm is a broad term for any small object including Amulets and Talismans, or an incantation believed to posses magical properties to protect, to bring good luck or to influence events.
An amulet protects from negative forces.
A talisman helps gain or achieve something specific.

An Amulet’s purpose is protection, warding-off evil, harm, illness and/or bad luck
.

An Amulet’s nature is passive — it protects simply by being worn or carried
. Some well known examples are the Evil eye, scarabs and St. Christophers.

A Talisman’s purpose is empowerment or attraction; bringing something to the wearer (luck, love, strength, success).

A Talisman’s nature is active — it is often “charged” or made for a specific purpose. Some examples are such things as love spells and runes composed to request something, or engraved symbols and planetary talismans fashioned for a particular goal, or even Voodoo dolls.
